HBO has officially set an August 16 premiere date for Lanterns, offering fans their clearest look yet at the upcoming DC Studios series through a new trailer that pushes the story far beyond the grounded mystery teased earlier.

The series stars Kyle Chandler as veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, a new recruit navigating the dangerous world of the Green Lantern Corps.

While earlier promotional material positioned Lanterns as a dark, earth-based investigation, the latest trailer hints at a much larger cosmic scope. The footage includes glimpses of alien worlds, Jordan in the classic Green Lantern Corps suit, and several demonstrations of the ring’s powers that were only subtly hinted at before.

Nathan Fillion returns as Guy Gardner

One of the most revealing parts of the trailer is the appearance of Nathan Fillion in his role of Guy Gardner, a character introduced in the previous Superman movie released last year.

Another part that fans got to see from the trailer is the appearance of Laura Linney in an unnamed role. In a particular scene, John Stewart tells her character: "I was raised fearless, and I'll do this better than he has ever done it before," alluding to Hal Jordan. She responds: "Then go and get it, John Stewart."

The tension between Jordan and Stewart is one of the most important elements of the story.

DC Studios leans into prestige television

The project has drawn attention not only for its connection to the larger DC universe but also for the creative team behind it.

The series was co-created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and comic writer Tom King. Mundy also serves as showrunner.

The cast also includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, J. Alphonse Nicholson and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

The trailer suggests Lanterns may become one of DC Studios’ most ambitious television projects yet, blending detective noir, intergalactic mythology and character-driven tension inside HBO’s prestige drama format.
