A surge in fire incidents across Delhi amid an ongoing heatwave has kept emergency services on edge, with over 180 distress calls reported in a single day. While most incidents were contained without serious harm, a firefighter sustained injuries while tackling a blaze at a plastic warehouse in northwest Delhi.
According to The Times of India, the number of calls received on Monday crossed 180, slightly lower than Sunday’s figure but still indicative of the strain on resources during extreme weather conditions. Officials said most fires were minor in nature, though a few required extensive deployment of personnel and equipment.
Firefighter injured in warehouse blaze
The most serious incident was reported late Sunday night from Aman Vihar, where a fire broke out at a plastic warehouse. The call was received at around 11.15 pm, prompting the dispatch of seven fire tenders to the site. During the operation, a firefighter was injured and rushed to the hospital.
Emergency responders managed to bring the blaze under control after sustained efforts. Officials at the spot indicated that a short circuit may have triggered the fire, although the exact cause is still under investigation.
Morning blaze spreads quickly
On Monday morning, another significant fire was reported from an open ground in Model Town, also in northwest Delhi. The fire, believed to have started in accumulated garbage, spread rapidly due to dry conditions and high temperatures. Eight fire tenders were deployed to contain the flames, which had intensified because of the heatwave and the presence of combustible material. Firefighters worked to prevent the blaze from reaching nearby structures, and no injuries were reported.

Later in the day, a fire broke out at Shram Shakti Bhawan in central Delhi, triggering a swift response from emergency teams. A call was received at 4.20 pm, after which six fire tenders were sent to the location. The blaze was brought under control within an hour, and officials confirmed that there were no injuries. Preliminary findings suggest that the fire originated in an outdoor air conditioning unit, though a detailed assessment is underway.
