Shivam Mishra, the son of tobacco businessman KK Mishra and the main suspect in the Kanpur Lamborghini crash case, was arrested Thursday morning at a hospital. The 26-year-old is slated to appear in court later today.

"Shivam Mishra has been arrested and he will now be presented in the court. We had received information that he has come to Kanpur, and our teams acted promptly and caught him," Kanpur DCP Atul Srivastava was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

The arrest took place a day after police disciplined a local Station House Officer for alleged "procedural lapses".

Mishra was taken into custody four days after a Lamborghini Revuelto, a luxury sports car worth over Rs 10 crore, reportedly lost control while speeding near Ring Wala Chauraha. It crashed into pedestrians and vehicles on Kanpur's VIP Road Sunday afternoon, causing injuries to six people.

One of the injured, Mohd Taufeeq (18), an e-rickshaw driver, later filed a police report.

Dramatic events lead to Shivam's arrest

Shivam Mishra's arrest on Thursday morning came after dramatic events on Wednesday.

The police's initial investigation stated that Mishra was driving the car. His name was added to a case with charges of negligent and reckless driving, putting lives at risk, and causing injury through dangerous actions. This all occurred while Mishra was fleeing.

However, on Wednesday, a man appeared at a Kanpur court claiming that he, not Shivam Mishra, was behind the wheel, NDTV reported. He identified himself as Mohan and said he was the designated driver.

Mohan claimed he lost control of the vehicle after Shivam Mishra had a sudden seizure just moments before the accident. Mishra's family had previously said he suffers from epilepsy.

He mentioned that an auto-locking system prevented him from getting out of the vehicle right after the crash, which forced him to move Mishra to the driver's seat despite the limited space.

However, police maintained that the evidence showed Shivam was the driver. They had videos of him being pulled out of the driver's seat after the crash. Because of this, the court refused to accept Mohan's surrender and requested a detailed report from the police.

Was Shivam unfit to drive?

Police have removed Gwaltoli SHO Santosh Gaur from his position due to negligence and failure to follow proper procedures after the accident, reported Hindustan Times. The Police Commissioner stated that transport authorities would also be investigated if medical findings indicate that Mishra was unfit to drive.

This case has gained more attention because the Mishra family had already been under scrutiny during Income Tax Department raids in March 2024. During those raids, multiple luxury vehicles and cash were seized from properties connected to the business group.
