The southwest monsoon is expected to advance further across multiple parts of the country over the next few days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rainfall activity in several regions.
According to the weather department, favourable conditions are developing for the monsoon to progress into more areas of the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and the Bay of Bengal within the next three to four days, per a report by The Indian Express.
Several cyclonic circulations over the Bay of Bengal, Vidarbha, Bangladesh and the Arabian Sea are likely to intensify rainfall activity this week.
Heavy rainfall likely in Northeast
The IMD has predicted scattered to fairly widespread rainfall across the Northeast throughout the week.

Heavy rain is expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on multiple days. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph are also likely over Assam and Meghalaya between June 3 and 6, reported The Indian Express.
Southern states brace for intense rain
Southern India is also expected to receive significant rainfall in the coming days.
Kerala and Mahe are likely to witness very heavy rainfall from June 3 to 6. Heavy showers are also forecast over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Lakshadweep and parts of Karnataka.

Eastern and northern regions under watch
Odisha has been placed under alert for heavy rainfall, hailstorms and strong winds. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are also expected to receive heavy rain later this week.
Northwestern states, including Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, are likely to experience scattered rainfall and thunderstorms. Rajasthan may witness thundersqualls with wind speeds touching 90 kmph.

For Delhi-NCR, the IMD has forecast partly cloudy skies between June 1 and 3, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of up to 60 kmph possible during severe weather conditions, per The Indian Express.

The weather department warned that strong winds and thunderstorms could lead to uprooted trees, power disruptions, crop damage and minor structural damage in vulnerable areas.
Residents have been advised to avoid open spaces during lightning, stay away from water bodies and unplug electrical appliances during severe weather activity.
