The Suvendu Adhikari-led government in West Bengal expanded its cabinet on Monday with 35 BJP MLAs taking oath as ministers at a ceremony held at Lok Bhavan.

Governor RN Ravi administered the oath of office to the newly-inducted ministers. The expansion comes three weeks after Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the Chief Minister on May 9, marking the formation of the first BJP government in West Bengal.

Cabinet strength rises to 41

With the latest induction, the strength of the West Bengal Cabinet has risen to 41 ministers, just three short of the maximum permitted strength in the 294-member Assembly.

Among the prominent faces inducted into the Cabinet are Swapan Dasgupta, Tapas Roy and Dr. Shankar Ghosh. Several senior BJP legislators and first-time ministers were also included in the expansion.

The newly-formed council of ministers includes 13 Cabinet ministers, three Ministers of State with Independent charge and 19 Ministers of State.

Key BJP leaders part of government

Before the Cabinet expansion, Suvendu Adhikari had taken oath along with senior BJP leaders Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Nisith Pramanik, Ashok Kirtania and Kshudiram Tudu.

The latest move follows a series of meetings held in New Delhi between Adhikari, West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya and the party’s central leadership regarding the composition of the Ministry.

Several notable BJP leaders have now entered the state cabinet in different capacities. Swapan Dasgupta, Tapas Roy, Deepak Barman, Manoj Kumar Oraon, Arjun Singh and Gouri Shankar Ghosh are among those who took oath as Cabinet ministers.

Dr. Indranil Khan, Malati Rava Roy and Rajesh Mahato were sworn in as Ministers of State with Independent Charge.

The expansion is being seen as a key step in shaping the BJP government’s administrative structure after its historic victory in the state assembly elections earlier this year.
