A Swiss International Air Lines aircraft encountered an engine-related mishap during takeoff, leaving six passengers injured and an emergency evacuation, disrupting a late-night departure from Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.

Engine issue forces takeoff rejection

Flight LX147, which was operated using an Airbus A330 aircraft, was supposed to fly from Delhi to Zurich. It is reported that one of the engines of the plane had a problem while the aircraft started its takeoff roll process, causing the engine to ignite at 1.08 am.

The airline confirmed the incident in a statement, saying, "We are aware of an incident involving flight LX147 in Delhi. The aircraft involved is an Airbus A330, registration HB-JHK. SWISS has established a task force. There were 228 passengers and four infants on board."

Emergency evacuation carried out

Passengers were evacuated on the runway using emergency slides after the aborted flight. Although six people were injured and transported to the hospital for treatment, authorities reported that everyone had safely disembarked. The crew did not report any injuries.

Detailing the sequence of events, SWISS stated, "Shortly after takeoff, just after 1 am local time in India, an issue occurred with one of the engines. The crew rejected the takeoff and, following an assessment of the situation, decided as a precaution to evacuate the aircraft. Six passengers currently receiving medical attention, crew unharmed."

The airline added that for a few passengers who could not use the slides, stairs were arranged to assist in evacuation.

Airline response and passenger assistance

The company stated that a task force has been launched and coordinated with the local authorities. Assistance has been provided to passengers who have been stranded at the airport for rebooking and accommodation.

"They have received contact cards to ensure we can reach them reliably," the airline said. "Such a situation is stressful for everyone involved. Our local teams are taking care of our passengers on site and are in direct contact with them. We are working closely with the local authorities."
