As Delhi geared up for New Yearâs Eve, law enforcement strengthened its presence across the cityâs Southeast district through Operation Aaghat 3.0. It is an aggressive crime-control drive that includes forceful action against organised and habitual offenders. Police registered multiple cases under key laws such as the Arms Act, Excise Act, NDPS Act, and the Gambling Act. The drive resulted in 285 formal arrests of accused persons believed to be involved in these violations.

The authorities also detained hundreds more under preventive provisions to avert possible disturbances during crowded festivities. There are over 1,300 individuals rounded up for checks and verifications. According to TOI, the operation was not just about arrests; it was about law enforcement personnel carrying out widespread seizures of illegal items, including country-made pistols, live cartridges, knives, large quantities of illicit liquor (over 12,000 quarters), and more than 6 kg of ganja, emphasising the extent of unregulated movement targeted in the sweeps.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Hemant Tiwari described the campaign as a necessary step to strengthen public safety as New Year celebrations draw near. The campaign is focusing on cracking down on organised crime, drug peddling, bootlegging, and gambling that could escalate during the holiday season.

A broader push for festival safety
Beyond the headline arrests and seizures, Operation Aaghat 3.0 saw police efforts extend to the recovery of stolen property, including hundreds of mobile phones and seized vehicles. Habitual offenders categorised as âbad charactersâ, as well as property criminals and vehicle lifters, were among those detained to ensure that celebrations arenât tainted by preventable misdemeanours or threats to public order.
