Major changes have been made to the voter list in PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah's state of Gujarat as well. The draft voter list published by the State Election Commission after the Special Intensive Revision or SIR process shows that 73 lakh 73 thousand 327 voters' names have been removed from the rolls. As a result, the state's total number of voters has dropped from 5 crore 8 lakh to 4 crore 34 lakh.

According to Election Commission sources, approximately 50,963 Booth Level Officers or BLOs conducted door-to-door voter verification work. This exercise was mainly carried out to remove the names of deceased voters, people who have permanently moved elsewhere, and infiltrators from the voter list.

Reasons behind deletion

Commission statistics show that among the 73 lakh 73 thousand 327 excluded voters, 18,07,278 are deceased. 40,25,553 people have permanently moved elsewhere. 9,69,662 voters are 'non-existent', meaning no trace of them could be found.

Along with this, 3,81,470 voters' names have been removed due to registration in two places. 1,89,364 people have been marked as 'others' in the list of excluded voters. However, there is no indication of who among these are 'infiltrators'.
