Indian Railways is planning a major overhaul of the Station Master cadre, with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewing measures aimed at giving them greater authority, better tools and clearer career pathways.

The review, held with senior railway officials on Friday, focused on making station-level operations safer, faster and more passenger-centric, according to the Ministry of Railways.

New authority comes calling

The ministry said the meeting examined the operational and administrative challenges faced by Station Masters in their day-to-day duties and looked at solutions to strengthen their effectiveness.

The ministry said, “The meeting discussed strengthening the role of Station Masters.” It added that proposals on enhanced administrative and operational powers, better career progression and greater opportunities to rise to higher management levels were reviewed.

The review was aimed at strengthening the role of Station Masters through enhanced administrative powers, improved career progression, additional manpower support and technology-driven tools.

More hands for busier tracks

A key part of the discussion was the need to expand support in multi-track and high-density sections, where traffic and operational complexity have grown.

Officials reviewed the possibility of deploying additional Station Masters in such areas and prioritising vacancy filling in the cadre. The ministry is also considering an integrated Station Management System to improve coordination among railway departments and speed up the resolution of passenger-related issues at stations.

A dash of modern wizardry

Technology upgrades formed another major strand of the review. The Railways discussed mobile app-based paperless working systems for Station Masters, along with Virtual Reality, simulators and other modern training tools to prepare staff for complex railway operations and emergency situations.

The ministry also reviewed proposals to enhance financial powers at station level, while officials said greater autonomy could help with timely maintenance, quicker response to passenger needs and more effective station management.

Safety first, and service close behind

The proposed reforms also touch on working conditions and safety. The meeting examined plans to provide improved safety equipment and more user-friendly operational tools at stations, especially in view of the growing participation of women Station Masters and women Pointsmen in railway operations.

The measures are intended to support safer, more efficient and passenger-centric railway operations across the Indian Railways network. The broader aim, officials said, is to build a station management system that can respond faster on the ground while improving service delivery across the network.
