The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has rolled out a new set of match-day regulations in IPL 2026, tightening restrictions on the involvement of benched players during games. The move is designed to streamline on-field operations and reduce unnecessary interruptions.

Clear limits on non-playing squad members

As per the updated rules, only the 16 players named on the official team sheet—comprising the playing XI and designated substitutes—are permitted any access to the field of play. Players outside this list are no longer permitted to step onto the field under any circumstances.

This marks a major shift from previous seasons, where non-playing members could assist with duties such as carrying drinks or relaying messages from the dugout.

Boundary line movement capped

In addition to field access restrictions, the BCCI has also limited the number of players allowed near the boundary rope. A maximum of five players wearing training bibs can be present outside the dugout at any given time.

These individuals can be part of the playing group or the extended squad, but the number must strictly remain within the cap. All other players are required to stay inside the designated team areas.

Focus on discipline and match flow

While the board has not explicitly cited a trigger for the change, the decision appears to be aimed at improving discipline and maintaining the flow of the game. Excessive movement around the boundary in recent seasons had raised concerns about distractions and operational clutter.

With IPL squads often extending to 20–25 players, the new rules significantly limit the role of non-playing members during matches. Teams will now need to adapt to a more structured and controlled environment on match days. Overall, the regulation reflects the BCCI’s intent to bring greater professionalism and clarity to IPL operations, ensuring a cleaner and more focused match experience.
