The Delhi High Court observed that tweets posted by Rana Ayyub between 2013 and 2017 were “highly derogatory, inflammatory and communal”, asking Delhi Police and X Corp to act.

Notice issued, urgent hearing scheduled

Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav issued notices to Ayyub, X and the police, directing them to file responses. The matter has been listed for further hearing on April 10. The case stems from a complaint by advocate Amita Sachdeva, following which a trial court ordered registration of an FIR and directed an investigation into the tweets.

Petitioner alleges insult to deities, figures

The plea claims that the tweets targeted Hindu deities like Ram and Sita and figures such as Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and could promote communal disharmony. During proceedings, the Delhi Police informed the court that the tweets in question are no longer accessible on X. The court stressed that the issue requires coordinated action between the central government, Delhi Police and X, given the seriousness of the allegations.
