Amazon has initiated another round of layoffs, affecting at least 100 white-collar employees in its robotics division, according to people familiar with the matter cited by Reuters. The move comes just two months after the tech giant cut around 16,000 jobs worldwide as part of a broader restructuring plan.

The latest layoffs primarily target teams responsible for designing warehouse robots and automation systems used in Amazon’s large network of fulfilment centres. These teams develop robotic arms and conveyance technologies that help sort and transport packages inside the company’s warehouses.

Confirming the development, Amazon said it regularly reviews its organisational structure to ensure its teams are well-positioned to innovate and serve customers. However, the company did not reveal the exact number of employees affected by the latest cuts.

Part of broader restructuring and AI shift

The layoffs come shortly after Amazon’s large-scale job cuts in January, when about 16,000 roles were eliminated globally. At the time, the company indicated that further workforce reductions could take place as part of its efforts to improve efficiency and focus on artificial intelligence.

Earlier this year, Amazon also stopped development of a warehouse robotics project known as Blue Jay. The system, which was presented at a company event in October last year, involved multiple robotic arms designed to pick several items at once, allowing workers to operate more efficiently in compact warehouse spaces.

Amazon has been steadily reducing its corporate workforce as part of this restructuring effort. Since October, the company has cut roughly 30,000 corporate jobs, including around 14,000 white-collar roles during the initial round of layoffs.

These reductions account for nearly 10 percent of Amazon’s corporate workforce. However, most of the company’s 1.5 million employees are hourly workers involved in warehouses and logistics operations. In addition to large-scale layoffs, smaller job cuts have also taken place across several divisions, including devices and services, books, podcasts and public relations. Hundreds of employees in India were also affected during earlier layoffs.

The continuing job reductions reflect a broader trend in the technology sector, where companies are reshaping operations, investing more in artificial intelligence and automation, and cutting costs after years of rapid hiring during the pandemic.
