West Indies coach Daren Sammy made an emotional appeal on social media as he and his team are still waiting for permission to travel back home. The team was knocked out of the T20 World Cup after losing to India in the Super 8 stage. However, the players have not been able to return due to international airspace restrictions caused by US and Israeli strikes on Iran. There is still no clear update on when the situation will return to normal and when the team will be able to fly back. Sammy’s post reflected the frustration and uncertainty in the camp.

Sammy shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) as he waits for clearance to board the return flight from India: "I just wanna go home."

Why is the West Indies team stranded in India?

Cricket West Indies said it is working closely with the ICC and government authorities to make sure the players can travel safely. Meanwhile, flight operations in the Gulf region have been suspended, and damage has also been reported at one of the busiest airports in the world, Dubai International Airport.

The board stated in a statement, "Cricket West Indies (CWI) wishes to advise that the departure of the West Indies Senior Men's Team from India, following their exit from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, has been delayed due to international airspace restrictions."

"These restrictions are a direct result of the security threats posed by military action in the Gulf Region, which has impacted several international flight routes and required airlines to adjust scheduled services for safety reasons." The West Indies team lost to India in a must-win Super Eight match in Kolkata and was knocked out of the tournament. The defeat ended their campaign in the T20 World Cup. The statement further added, "CWI appreciates the understanding and concern of our fans, families, and stakeholders during this time."

A BCCI official spoke to PTI anonymously: "West Indies are still here. There's no confirmation when they will leave. Obviously, things are being looked after by the ICC. I don't think West Indies boys are under any kind of pressure to go back home." Apart from the West Indies, Zimbabwe is also stuck in India because of the same travel restrictions.
