A not-so-uncommon problem many residents face in several regions across India is monkeys entering their homes, causing damage and creating unsafe conditions. As urban spaces expand closer to forested areas, these encounters are only increasing. Here are eight practical ways to ensure that these monkeys do not repeatedly enter your space if you're looking for effective, non-harmful methods to keep them at bay:
Motion-sensor deterrents
Motion-activated devices are increasingly preferred by many home gardeners. These gadgets turn on lights, sounds, or even sprinklers of water when movement is detected. The sudden sensory reaction often startles monkeys and prevents them from returning to the same area.

Natural odours to keep monkeys away
Certain odorous household items work effectively as natural repellents. Lemon and orange peels, garlic cloves, and pieces of cloth dipped in vinegar are known to repel monkeys. Placement near plants, the balustrade, and other points where the monkey frequently causes disturbance reduces the incidence of its visitation.
Reflective objects
Simple reflective items like old CDs, small mirrors, or metallic strips can make a big difference. These reflections create visual discomfort for the monkeys, thus keeping them away from those areas.
Avoid feeding them
Feeding them even once may inadvertently establish a pattern. They tend to remember food sources and may return with larger groups. Give them no food so as not to disturb them in the future.
Images of predator animals
Instinctively, monkeys avoid animals such as snakes, tigers, and bears. Pictures, cut-outs, and realistic toys of these predators placed near access points or problem areas can deter them from accessing the space.
Avoid plastic bags
Monkeys often associate plastic bags with food. Therefore, carrying or leaving them around might attract unwanted attention. Instead, especially for places that have high concentrations of monkeys, use cloth or jute bags.

Pluck fruits on time
Fruit-bearing trees can be a big attraction. Harvest ripe fruits on time to reduce the temptation for monkeys to enter your compound or climb your terrace.
Utilise loud, sudden noises
Frightening sounds, like sudden clapping or banging, will keep monkeys off. Though not a permanent cure, this will prevent them from staying near your house.
These are simple measures that can make the environment safer and more peaceful, without harming the animals.
