Wet wipes are often used as a quick and easy way to clean dirt, sweat, and makeup, especially during hot summer days. Because they are so convenient, people of all age groups use them regularly.

However, experts warn that using them too much may not be safe. Dermatologists say that while wipes help in quick cleaning, frequent use can harm the skin.

In a conversation with Hindustan Times, dermatologist Dr Madhur Eshwar Rao Basude from Apollo Clinic explained the risks and shared important tips on how to use wipes safely without damaging the skin.

Why overusing wet wipes can harm skin

Dr Basude says, ā€œThe convenience of cleaning wipes is a great alternative for something refreshing on hot, humid days; however, habitual use can damage your skin's natural barrierā€. He explains that wipes are made to clean dirt, sweat, and bacteria, but many of them contain chemicals like surfactants and alcohol that remove the skin’s natural oils.

He also said that using them again and again can cause dryness, irritation, and disturb the natural balance of microorganisms on the skin. The doctor further says. ā€œWhen used in a humid environment, residue left by the wipes will combine with sweat and/or sebum, causing further aggravation to the skin due to increased sensitivity."

Common summer skin problems

Overuse of wipes can lead to several skin issues during summer. Dr Basude explains, ā€œPeople frequently show symptoms of contact dermatitis when they're using a lot of wipes and then have redness, itchiness, or blisters on various parts of their skin."

He also warns about folliculitis, a condition where hair follicles get infected due to blockage and bacteria. Early signs include redness, burning, itching, and small bumps after using wet wipes.

Ingredients to avoid in wet wipes

Some ingredients in wipes can cause irritation and allergies. Alcohol can make the skin dry and damage its protective layer, especially in people with sensitive skin. Fragrance is also a common cause of allergies and can be harmful for children and people who easily get allergic reactions.

Preservatives like methylisothiazolinone and parabens may also trigger allergic reactions. Dr Basude says, ā€œIf a person has had a previous history (or any of these) skin concerns, they are at a higher risk for aggravated skin problems from wipes."

Safe usage and when to avoid

Dr Basude advises that wet wipes should be used only when water or a mild cleanser is not available. He suggests choosing wipes that are fragrance-free, alcohol-free, and hypoallergenic, and also doing a patch test before using them regularly.

He also says wipes should not be used on broken skin, sunburned skin, or skin that has recently been treated. People with conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea, as well as infants, should avoid using wipes because their skin is more sensitive.

Wet wipes can be useful in some situations, but they should not replace washing your face with water. Using them too much, especially with strong chemicals, can cause skin problems.

The best way is to use wipes only when needed, check what ingredients are inside them, and follow a proper skincare routine to keep your skin healthy and safe.
