International Nurses Day is observed every year on May 12 to recognise the contribution of nurses across the world.

The origin of International Nurses Day

The observance of International Nurses Day was officially established by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) in 1965. Later, in 1974, May 12 was chosen as the fixed date to honour Florence Nightingale’s birth anniversary and her role in shaping modern nursing practices.

Over the years, the day has grown beyond symbolic recognition. It now serves as an occasion to reflect on working conditions, challenges faced by nurses, and the increasing demands on healthcare professionals worldwide.

Florence Nightingale and the foundation of modern nursing

Florence Nightingale became a defining figure in nursing during the Crimean War in the 1850s. She worked in military hospitals where she introduced strict hygiene practices and better patient care systems, which significantly improved survival rates among wounded soldiers.

Her approach to sanitation, cleanliness and organised care laid the foundation for structured nursing education. In 1860, she also helped establish the Nightingale School of Nursing in London, which became a model for similar institutions across the world.

How modern healthcare recognises nurses

International Nurses Day is now observed globally through awareness programmes, healthcare campaigns, and appreciation events for nursing staff. Hospitals and health organisations use the occasion to acknowledge the role nurses play in patient care, emergency response, and community health services.

The day also brings attention to the pressures faced by nurses, including long working hours, staff shortages, and increasing patient loads in hospitals and clinics.

Continuing relevance in 2026

In 2026, the observance continues to underline the importance of nursing as a profession that supports healthcare systems at every level. From intensive care units to rural health centres, nurses remain central to patient recovery and medical coordination.

The legacy of Florence Nightingale remains closely linked to the profession, serving as a reminder of how modern nursing developed from structured care practices into a specialised and essential field within global healthcare systems.
