With the mercury rising to over 40 degrees Celsius in several parts of the country, keeping homes cool is a challenge, especially for homes that do not use air conditioners due to their high cost or lack of feasibility.

Though ACs are the best option for beating the heat, their high cost and increasing electricity charges make them a luxury for several homes. Even in rented homes, it is not possible to install a split AC. Though window ACs are easier to install, space and fittings are a necessity.

Why ACs don’t work for everyone

However, it is important to note that the cost of acquiring an AC is only half of the overall cost. Installation and other equipment costs contribute to the overall cost of owning an AC.

There is also another factor that is important in this context. ACs cannot be used in situations where frequent relocation is necessary.

Coolers and fans still remain the most used

Coolers still remain the most used alternative for ACs. Coolers are still the most used alternative for ACs in India. Coolers are still a more cost-effective option compared to ACs. Coolers consume less power and are easier to maintain. Coolers can still be used in dry climatic conditions, especially in North India.

Fans still remain an important alternative for ACs in India. High-speed fans can be used for effective ventilation in homes. BLDC fans are also increasingly being used as they consume less power. Pedestal fans and table fans can be used for effective ventilation in homes.

Portable devices and small fixes

Portable air conditioning units are useful, especially for renters. However, they are still expensive and not very energy-efficient. Therefore, they are not an alternative solution for many homes.

Air circulators and small fans are also being used to enhance airflow. Although they do not reduce the temperature of the room, they reduce the discomfort caused by stagnant air.

Simple cooling techniques are still relevant

Many homes are still using simple techniques to cool the home. These are cheap techniques that have been around for years. Using damp curtains or khus screens is one technique. It cools the incoming air. Using ice or cold water in front of a fan is another technique. It provides short-term relief from the hot weather.

Using the windows during the early morning and late evenings allows cool air to move into the home. Using curtains or blinds to block the direct sunlight is also an effective technique.

Managing heat through everyday habits

However, it is not just the equipment but the usage of space as well. Reducing heat inside the house is possible if we reduce the heat-producing equipment inside the house during the daytime.

Light colors inside the house help in reflecting heat compared to darker colors. Even indoor plants can be beneficial in increasing comfort levels inside the house.

In addition, power backup devices such as inverters are useful in running fans and coolers during power outages.
