As the screen time increases day by day and it becomes a regular part of life, it raises concerns over eye strain and weakening vision.
A recent discussion on Quora raised the question of whether eyesight can be improved naturally. Responding to this, Dr Jayashree K Bhat, Consultant – Ophthalmology at Aster RV Hospital, explained that while refractive errors such as myopia or hyperopia usually require glasses or medical treatment, natural methods can still help maintain healthy eyes and reduce strain. She further added that, a combination of good lifestyle habits, proper nutrition and regular eye check-ups can help in maintaining healthy eyes.
Daily habits that help protect eyesight
Simple lifestyle practices can make a huge difference in keeping eyes healthy. One widely recommended method is the 20-20-20 rule. After every 20 minutes of screen use, it is advisable to look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds to help relax the eye muscles.
Adequate sleep is very important for eye repair. Experts suggest getting seven to nine hours of sleep each night is good for healthy eyes. Staying hydrated also prevents dry eyes and blurry vision, while limiting caffeine and alcohol can help maintain overall eye moisture. It is advisable to wear UV-protected sunglasses outdoors, and ensuring proper lighting and posture while reading or using devices can further reduce eye strain.
Eye exercises and foods that support vision
Although eye exercises cannot permanently correct vision, they can improve flexibility and reduce discomfort. Actions such as rapid blinking, eye rolling and focus are advisable for maintaining good eye health.
Diet also plays a key role in eye health. Leafy greens like spinach and kale contain lutein and zeaxanthin that protect the retina. Carrots, pumpkin and sweet potatoes have beta-carotene, which helps in better late-night vision. Fatty fish like salmon support retinal health, while citrus fruits, berries, nuts and seeds provide essential vitamins that protect eye cells.
Even though natural remedies cannot fully treat or correct, healthy habits, balanced nutrition and regular eye check-ups can help in maintaining strong vision.
