Loved for comfort and convenience, clogs could be doing unseen damage to your feet over time. Here’s what an orthopaedic surgeon says.

Clogs have now become a regular part of many people’s lives. They are easy to slip into, very light, and comfortable right from the start. They can be worn for all kinds of activities, from short errands to long hours on your feet. However, what may seem like a very convenient option in the short term may not always be the best for your feet in the long run.

In a recent video posted on Instagram on February 9, Mumbai orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Manan Vora discusses why clogs, especially the more popular varieties like Crocs, may not be the best option for daily wear.

The hidden cost of everyday comfort

According to Dr Vora, “Crocs are light, roomy, and easy to slip on, which is why so many people like them, including me. But that simplicity comes with trade-offs. Most Crocs lack structured arch support and don't have a firm heel cup. Because of that, the shoe doesn't hold your foot securely, and your toes often grip to keep it in place.”

Since the foot is not properly supported, people tend to unconsciously hold the footwear in place with their toes. This habit can lead to changes in the natural functioning of the feet over time.

Why long-term use can be a problem

According to Dr. Vora, clogs can put pressure on the arches, heels, and even tendons when worn for long periods of time. This is especially true for people with flat feet, older individuals, and those who spend a lot of time on their feet throughout the day.

“When used over long periods of time, this can contribute to strain in the arches, heels, and sometimes even the tendons, especially in people who are flat-footed, older, or on their feet for many hours. Crocs also don't stabilise the heel well, which is why they're not ideal for long walks, workouts, or any physical activity”, he states.

When clogs actually make sense

However, Dr. Vora does not completely rule out the use of clogs. According to him, they can be worn for short, low-intensity activities like running errands, doing light housework, or working in an office job that involves sitting for most of the time.

"Clogs are only fine for short, low-demand use, quick errands, light chores, or mostly seated work. But you cannot consider them actual supportive footwear. Use them occasionally. And for anything more demanding, choose shoes with proper arch support and heel stability, he said.
