Discovery of Australia’s first European settlement (1788)

Back in 1788 on this date, Captain Arthur Phillip raised the British flag at Sydney Cove, effectively establishing the first permanent European settlement in Australia. This event is commemorated today as Australia Day, though it remains contested by many Indigenous Australians who recognise the date as a symbol of colonisation.

Discovery of the Cullinan Diamond (1905)

On January 26, 1905, the Cullinan diamond, the largest gem-quality diamond ever found, weighing over 3,100 carats, was unearthed at the Premier Mine near Pretoria, South Africa. The extraordinary gem would later be cut into several major stones, some of which form part of the British Crown Jewels.

Republic Day of India (1950)

On this date in 1950, the Constitution of India officially came into effect, replacing colonial-era governance and formally transforming the nation into a sovereign democratic republic. The Constituent Assembly’s decision to enforce the Constitution on January 26 was chosen to honour the Indian National Congress’s 1930 declaration of ‘Purna Swaraj’ (complete independence). Cairo Fire (Black Saturday) (1952)

On January 26, 1952, the Cairo Fire, also known as Black Saturday, erupted in downtown Cairo, Egypt. Widespread riots led to the burning and looting of hundreds of buildings, reflecting rising tensions during the nation’s struggle against British colonial influence.

These include milestones in exploration, natural sciences, nation-building, and civil conflict- such as the first demonstration of television by John Logie Baird in 1926 and other landmark developments in world history.
