England captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson are being investigated by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) following an alleged nightclub incident that took place after England’s victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s.
The incident reportedly occurred during a team night out after England secured a convincing win in the series opener. While details remain limited, the ECB has launched an inquiry to determine whether any team protocols or disciplinary standards were breached. The board is currently gathering information before deciding on any further action.
ECB gathers information as inquiry continues
According to reports, both Stokes and Atkinson were present during the incident, which allegedly involved another individual at a London nightclub. The ECB has informed the relevant authorities and is working to establish the full sequence of events. The board, in a statement on Monday, said, “The ECB is currently investigating a breach of team protocols following the conclusion of the first Men’s Test against New Zealand. Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when an incident took place." They also added, “We are currently seeking further information, and an announcement regarding the squad for the second Test will be made in due course. The Cricket Regulator has been informed and we will provide a further update when possible.”
Stokes acknowledged how much criticism England would have faced had they lost the first Test, and expressed his excitement about having a "proper beer with the boys."
“I knew how big this game was in terms of the result and how it was going to be perceived externally if it didn’t go well, but now it’s gone well,” Stokes said.

The investigation comes at a sensitive time for England cricket, with the team preparing for the second Test against New Zealand. Any potential action could have implications for squad selection, although both players remain available unless the ECB decides otherwise.
Focus shifts to the second Test preparations
England’s management has placed a strong emphasis on maintaining professional standards within the squad in recent years. The latest incident is therefore likely to attract significant attention as officials assess whether team rules were violated.

For Stokes, the scrutiny is particularly notable given his leadership role as captain. Atkinson, meanwhile, has emerged as an important member of England’s pace attack and will also be keen to put the matter behind him.
With the investigation still ongoing, the ECB is expected to provide further clarification in the coming days. Until then, England’s preparations for the second Test continue, while questions remain over whether the incident will lead to any disciplinary consequences for the two players.
