The BJP’s massive victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections may bring significant changes to Bengal’s cricket administration, especially for former India captain Sourav Ganguly and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

After ending the Trinamool Congress’s long rule in Bengal, the BJP is now set to form the government in the state for the first time. The political shift is expected to impact several major institutions across Bengal, including sports bodies and cricket administration.

Ganguly remains a central figure in Bengal cricket

Sourav Ganguly, one of Bengal’s most influential sporting personalities, currently serves as the president of CAB. Over the years, Ganguly has maintained a balanced and largely neutral public image despite repeated speculation about his political future. His ability to maintain cordial relations across political circles helped him operate smoothly within the Bengal cricket administration.

However, the change in government could alter the existing power structure around CAB. State governments play an important role in sports infrastructure, stadium development, security arrangements, and hosting major cricket tournaments. With the BJP now in power, new political and administrative dynamics may emerge within Bengal cricket.

CAB could witness administrative changes

CAB remains one of the most influential state cricket associations in India. Eden Gardens regularly hosts international matches, IPL fixtures, and major domestic tournaments. Any change in the relationship between the state government and CAB could directly affect future projects and cricket-related planning in Bengal. Political observers believe the BJP government may look to establish a stronger influence in key sporting institutions across the state. In such a situation, Ganguly’s administrative experience and strong public image could become even more important.

So far, Ganguly has not made any official comment regarding the election results or the possible impact on Bengal cricket. But following BJP’s historic win, discussions have already intensified around how the new political environment could shape the future of CAB and Ganguly’s role within Bengal’s sporting ecosystem.
