Indian model Bhavitha Mandava’s Met Gala 2026 debut for Chanel has triggered debate online after her understated couture look was compared with the dramatic gowns worn by global celebrities on the red carpet. While Chanel described the outfit as a haute couture reinterpretation of Bhavitha’s runway look from its 2025 Métiers d’art show, social media users questioned whether the first Indian Chanel ambassador deserved a more visually striking fashion moment.
Indian model Bhavitha Mandava made headlines at the Met Gala 2026 not only for her debut appearance, but also for the conversation her Chanel ensemble sparked online.

Bhavitha, who became the first Indian model to open a Chanel runway show and later the first Indian global house ambassador for the luxury label, arrived at fashion’s biggest night in what initially appeared to be a minimalist street-style outfit. The look featured a beige muslin half-zip sweater layered over a white top, paired with blue “denim-effect” trousers and Chanel’s signature two-tone heels.
However, the outfit carried far more craftsmanship than its understated appearance suggested.
According to an official statement shared by Chanel with HT Lifestyle, the ensemble was a haute couture reinterpretation of the outfit Bhavitha wore while opening the brand’s Métiers d’art show in New York in December 2025. The label revealed that the trousers, which resembled denim, were engineered entirely from silk and muslin and required nearly 250 hours of handwork.
Chanel’s full-circle tribute meets internet criticism
Chanel described the styling as a tribute to Bhavitha’s personal journey and return to New York, the city where she was first discovered as a model.
“Bhavitha Mandava, Chanel ambassador, wore at the Met Gala a beige muslin half zip sweater over a white muslin top and muslin printed pants with a blue denim effect. This look is a Haute Couture reinterpretation of the outfit she wore to open the Métiers d’art show in New York last December,” the brand said in its statement to HT Lifestyle.
Bhavitha herself called the outfit a “full-circle moment” in a video shared with British Vogue while getting ready for the gala.
“This is also surreal… My look is a couture version of my opening look, a full-circle moment,” she said.
The online discussion intensified after Bhavitha posted a now-viral bathroom selfie featuring Margot Robbie, Ayo Edebiri and BLACKPINK members, all dressed in dramatic couture gowns. Social media users quickly began debating why the Indian model’s debut appearance leaned toward “quiet luxury” instead of a more theatrical red carpet statement.
Many users argued that the look failed to create the kind of visual impact often expected from a Met Gala debut, especially for a South Asian face representing a major luxury house on a global stage.
Others, however, defended the styling choice, saying the outfit reflected Chanel’s long-standing preference for restrained elegance over spectacle.

The debate once again highlighted the divide between craftsmanship-driven couture and the internet’s growing appetite for instantly viral fashion moments.
A couture look that looked deceptively simple
Whereas social media mostly concentrated on the casual nature of the dress, the fashion analysts mentioned that it was a close match to the aesthetic style associated with Chanel. The process behind making the outfit, especially how the denim illusion dress was made using silk and muslin, drew interest from the fashion experts after Chanel revealed the effort taken to make the outfit.
For Chanel and Bhavitha, this dress signified tradition, storytelling, and history. On the other hand, online, this dress was viewed as a failure to take advantage of the opportunity to make a bold fashion statement.
