De Klerk’s all-round show guides RCB to dramatic opening victory

A four-wicket haul and a clutch 63-run knock seal RCB’s first victory of the Women’s Premier League in a last-ball thriller at DY Patil Stadium

The Women's Premier League begins with a clutch finish, as the hard-fought match ends with RCB’s solid victory over the Mumbai Indians. The match was played at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. It was a last-ball thriller and Nadine De Klerk produced a clutch performance to cross the finishing line for RCB. In the women's World Cup, Nadine De Klerk played a brilliant knock against India where she made 84 runs to get victory against Smriti Mandhana’s side but on Friday her quick 63 runs helped Smriti Mandhana’s side to get victory.

MI went off balance

On Friday the Women's Premier League starts with a banger performance of Honey Singh. Winning the toss RCB chose to bowl first. Young prodigy G Kamilini gave a good start to the MI innings, scoring 32 runs but a series of wickets, put Mumbai Indians off the track which also affected their run rate. At the first 11 overs they only made 67 runs losing four wickets. RCB had a very good control till then, Nicola Carey the Australian power hitter smashed 40 runs in just 29 balls and Sajeevan Sajana scored 45 runs in 25 balls. Together they formed a 82 runs partnership in 49 balls which helped MI to end their innings at 154 runs.

Nadine De Klerk took four wickets giving 26 runs, Lauren Bell and Shreyanka Patil took one wicket each.

Klerk hit 20 runs in the last over

In reply, Grace Harris and Smriti Mandhana hammered 40 runs in just 3.5 overs which formed a base of attack and helped batters down the order to play fully. RCB also lost track in the middle overs which led the match to go till the last ball. Nadine De Klerk scored 63 runs, of which 20 runs came in the last over.

In the last over RCB needed 18 runs to win, the first two balls by Nat Sciver Brunt went for dot after this the south african all rounder hammered two sixes and two fours to bring victory in the first match.

RCB’s victory offers an indication of how this year's WPL will unfold. MI is scheduled to play its next match on Saturday.
