In an interview with Luzu live TV, filmed in December and broadcast early this week, the 38-year-old agreed in October to a three-year contract with Inter Miami, which will keep him with the MLS team until the 2028 tournament.

What does Messi want?

According to Messi, “I don’t see myself as a coach. I like management, but if I have to decide between the options, I would like to be an owner. I would like to have my own club, to grow it from the bottom up, and to give kids and people the opportunity to develop and make it an important club. If I had to choose, that’s what would appeal to me most."

Messi's words provide an overview of how one of the most accomplished football players plans to live after putting up his boots. The eight-time Ballon d'Or champion is already moving in that way. He jointly owns Deportivo LSM, a fourth-level team in Uruguay, with Luis Suarez, an Inter Miami teammate and close friend.

Suarez explained about the club, saying, “It is a family dream that began in 2018. We have grown a lot with more than 3,000 members.” He added, “I want to offer Uruguay football opportunities and tools for teenagers and children to grow.”

Messi's dedication to the planning and organisational aspect of the game, instead of mentoring from a distance, can be seen by the fact that his Inter Miami deal also involves a possible minority ownership share in the team.

Messi is still performing at a very high level on the pitch. He had an outstanding MLS campaign and won the Golden Boot along with Nashville's Sam Surridge and LAFC's Denis Bouanga. Also, he made 19 assists, bringing his overall goal contributions to 48 in just a single short in the 2019 league. Messi made MLS history by becoming the first player to earn MVP twice in a row.
