India’s women’s cricket team has secured a place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics despite crashing out in the group stage of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. The team qualified after emerging as Asia’s top-ranked side under the ICC’s qualification pathway for cricket’s Olympic return.
Asia’s best team earns direct qualification
India’s hopes of reaching the T20 World Cup semi-finals ended after defeat to Australia, but the campaign still ended on a positive note. With no other Asian team finishing above them in the tournament, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side claimed the continent’s lone automatic Olympic qualification spot.

India qualified from Asia, while Australia, South Africa and Great Britain also sealed their places for the six-team women’s event at the 2028 Olympics.
Two places still up for grabs
The remaining two Olympic spots will be decided through separate qualification routes. Hosts United States can earn an automatic place if they break into the top 15 of the ICC Women’s T20I rankings before the qualification deadline. If they fail to do so, that berth will go to the next highest-ranked eligible team after the 2026 ICC Women’s Champions Trophy.

The final place will be decided through the inaugural ICC Women’s Olympics Qualifier in 2027, featuring the next eight highest-ranked eligible teams that have not already qualified.
Cricket will return to the Olympic Games for the first time since 1900, with both men’s and women’s tournaments being played in the T20 format. While India’s World Cup campaign ended in disappointment, qualification for Los Angeles 2028 gives the team another opportunity to compete for a historic Olympic medal on one of sport’s biggest stages.
