The rivalry between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal FC is more than just football. The Kolkata Derby has carried over a century of passion, emotions, unforgettable victories, heartbreaking defeats, and historic moments that shaped Indian football. From iconic goals to record-breaking crowds and tragic incidents, the rivalry has remained one of the biggest football spectacles in Asia.

Early dominance and unforgettable golden eras

The first-ever meeting between the two clubs took place on 8 August 1921 in the Coochbehar Cup semifinal, which ended goalless before Mohun Bagan won the replay 3-0. Rabi Ganguly scored the first-ever goal in derby history, while Poltu Dasgupta and Abhilash Ghosh added the other goals.

East Bengal secured their first official derby victory in the Calcutta Football League on 28 May 1925 with Nepal Chakraborty scoring the winner in a 1-0 triumph. Mohun Bagan later dominated the rivalry during the 1930s, losing only one derby between 1933 and 1939 while collecting multiple trophies. Memorable victories included a 4-1 Darbhanga Shield win in 1934 and a commanding 4-0 triumph in the Raja Memorial Shield final in 1937.

The 1960s became another successful chapter for Mohun Bagan under innovative coach Amal Dutta, whose revolutionary 4-2-4 formation helped the Mariners achieve major success, including a memorable 3-1 IFA Shield final win over East Bengal.

However, the 1970s belonged to East Bengal. The Red and Gold Brigade remained unbeaten in the derby for 1932 days and scripted history with a stunning 5-0 victory in the 1975 IFA Shield final, one of the most iconic scorelines in Indian football history.

Tragedy, record crowds and modern-day dominance

One of the darkest moments in Indian football occurred on 16 August 1980 when a stampede during a derby at Eden Gardens claimed the lives of 16 supporters. The day is now remembered as Football Lovers’ Day.

The rivalry produced another unforgettable chapter in 1997 during the Federation Cup semifinal at Salt Lake Stadium. A record crowd of 1,31,781 spectators witnessed Baichung Bhutia score a sensational hat-trick as East Bengal defeated Mohun Bagan 4-1 in one of the most celebrated matches in Indian football history.

Modern-era derbies have also delivered memorable moments. Mohun Bagan defeated East Bengal 5-3 in the 2009 I-League with Nigerian striker Chidi Edeh scoring four goals, while East Bengal answered with a dominant 4-0 victory in the Calcutta Football League in 2015.

The ISL era has added a new chapter to the rivalry. On 29 January 2022, Kiyan Nassiri became the youngest player to score a derby hat-trick after guiding Mohun Bagan to a 3-1 victory. Mohun Bagan later extended their supremacy by recording eight consecutive derby wins by February 2023. From emotional victories to unforgettable drama, the Kolkata Derby continues to stand tall as one of the most historic rivalries in world football.
