India’s squad for the Afghanistan series featured several expected names, but the biggest surprise came through the inclusion of uncapped players Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey. With Jasprit Bumrah rested and Mohammed Shami unavailable, the selectors used the series to test new talent, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar hinted that both players are also being viewed as potential World Cup options.
Gurnoor Brar earns a reward after a steady rise
Punjab pacer Gurnoor Brar has quietly built a reputation as a fast bowler capable of generating bounce and pace. Interestingly, cricket was not his first choice growing up, as he initially preferred football and tennis. However, his height eventually pushed him toward fast bowling, and he modelled his game around South African legend Dale Steyn.

Brar’s progress accelerated after impressing Shubman Gill during youth cricket. Gill reportedly supported his development within Punjab cricket, helping him move through the domestic system. From working as an IPL net bowler to securing opportunities with Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans, Brar steadily climbed the ladder.

Although injuries and limited IPL appearances slowed his momentum, selectors remained impressed by his raw pace and ability to trouble batters on hard surfaces. India now sees him as a promising long-term fast-bowling option.
Harsh Dubey’s domestic form opened the door
Harsh Dubey, meanwhile, enters the squad as a left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder after a remarkable domestic season with Vidarbha. He enjoyed an outstanding Ranji Trophy campaign, finishing among the leading wicket-takers while also contributing important runs lower down the order.

His consistent performances across domestic cricket and India A assignments strengthened his case for national selection. Dubey also gained valuable IPL exposure with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where his disciplined bowling and useful batting impressed team management.

With Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel rested for the Afghanistan Test, Dubey now has a major opportunity to prove himself at the international level. The selection of Brar and Dubey reflects India’s larger transition plans as the team management continues to identify fresh options ahead of future ICC tournaments.
