Many people are sharing screenshots of an email allegedly sent by Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Amritsar stating that their admission offer was issued due to a “technical glitch” and now stands withdrawn, triggering outrage and debate online.

The controversy surfaced after screenshots from the institute’s admissions office began circulating on social media. The email informed the candidate that the MBA admission offer was generated “due to an inadvertent technical glitch” and therefore did not constitute a valid admission under the approved process.

What the email said

According to the screenshot shared online, the institute informed the candidate that the admission offer was issued in error and did not qualify as a valid admission under the approved process.

The email further stated that any acceptance fee already paid by the student would be refunded and that the candidature would be reconsidered in later admission rounds, if applicable.

The issue gained wider attention after several social media users questioned the impact such a reversal could have on students who had already begun making major financial and personal decisions based on the offer letter.

“You rejected someone’s offer letter after 2 days?” the post read.

The post further claimed that the student had already paid “₹1,00,000 as token money,” taken a “₹30,00,000 loan” and informed family members about securing admission at an IIM before receiving the withdrawal email.

“This is not a joke,” the post stated.

Debate over accountability

The incident quickly sparked a wider discussion online around institutional accountability and the impact such decisions can have on students and families.

One user wrote, “This is bigger than just an ‘admission error.’ For students, an IIM offer is not just an email - it’s months of hard work, family pride, financial commitment, and life planning.”

Another comment said, “A ‘technical glitch’ may sound administrative from the institution’s side, but for a student, it can completely change emotional and professional plans overnight.”

Some users also questioned the institute’s handling of the matter and called for a public clarification instead of individual emails.

“College should clarify this in open light instead of just sending emails of glitch and not taking responsibility of carelessly sending and revoking offer letters,” another user commented.

The incident has since led to broader conversations on social media about admission systems, student expectations and institutional responsibility in high-stakes academic processes.
