After months of uncertainty surrounding his future with the national team, Neymar has officially earned a place in Brazil’s 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Injuries, surgery, and a long recovery period had raised serious doubts over whether the veteran forward would make the final cut, but new Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has now handed him a major opportunity.
Speaking after announcing the squad in Rio de Janeiro, Ancelotti described Neymar as one of the most important footballers in the Brazilian setup. However, the coach also made it clear that reputation alone would not guarantee a starting place in the team. According to him, the same standards and expectations applied to Neymar as to every other player in the squad.
Neymar set for a different tactical role
Ancelotti suggested that Neymar could feature in a different tactical role during the tournament. Instead of leading the attack from the front, the former Barcelona and PSG star may operate in a more central attacking position closer to midfield. The Brazil coach believes Neymar is gradually rediscovering his rhythm while playing for Santos and can still influence games with his creativity and experience.

The Italian manager also highlighted Neymar’s importance beyond the pitch. He stated that the forward plays a major role in maintaining a positive dressing-room atmosphere and helps bring the best out of the players around him.

Ancelotti believes his leadership and presence could prove vital during a high-pressure tournament like the World Cup.
Ancelotti sends a strong fitness warning
This will be Neymar’s fourth World Cup appearance for Brazil. Remarkably, he has not played for the national side since October 2023, making this comeback even more significant. It is also the first time Ancelotti has selected Neymar since taking charge of the Brazilian national team.
Despite the emotional return, Ancelotti issued a firm warning, insisting Neymar would only play if he proves his fitness, sharpness, and readiness on the field. The Brazil coach stressed that the World Cup cannot depend on a single superstar and said his priority is building a team willing to fight together for the trophy.
