The India U20 national football team saw their title defence come to a painful end after losing 4-3 on penalties to the Bangladesh U20 national football team in the final of the SAFF U20 Championship in Malé, Maldives. After a tense 90 minutes ended goalless at the National Football Stadium, the match was decided from the spot, where Bangladesh held their nerve to clinch their second title.

Missed chances prove costly

India had opportunities to seal the game in regulation time but failed to capitalise. Early on, Vishal Yadav came close with a header, while several set-piece situations went begging. The second half followed a similar pattern, with India dominating phases but lacking the finishing touch. A crucial moment came in the 64th minute when a goalkeeping error from Bangladesh almost handed India the lead, only for the chance to slip away. As fatigue set in, both sides struggled to find a breakthrough, pushing the contest into a penalty shootout.

Penalty drama decides outcome

The shootout turned tense quickly. Rishikanta Laishram saw his opening effort saved, putting India on the back foot. While Samson Ahongshangbam, Vishal Yadav and Md. Arbash converted their penalties, the decisive blow came when Omang Dodum, the tournament’s joint top scorer, missed his attempt by firing over the bar. Bangladesh goalkeeper Ismail Hossain Mahin played a key role, making crucial saves to tilt the balance in his team’s favour.

Bangladesh reclaim title

The victory marks Bangladesh’s second SAFF U20 crown, having previously won in 2024. For India, it was a reversal of fortunes after they had beaten the same opponents in a penalty shootout in last year’s final. Despite the loss, India remains the most successful side in the tournament’s history with four titles.

Strong campaign ends in disappointment

India’s run to the final included a dominant 3-0 win over Pakistan and a 5-0 semifinal victory against Bhutan, underlining their strength throughout the tournament. However, the inability to convert chances in the final proved decisive. While the campaign showcased the promise of India’s young talent, it ultimately ended in disappointment, with Bangladesh emerging champions after a nerve-wracking finish.
