Chennai Super Kings started unsteadily in the first two matches, though their batting looked much improved and decent in their first home match. Chennai Super Kings put 209 runs against the challenging bowling line-up of Punjab Kings. Ayush Mhatre, Sarfaraz Khan and Shivam Dube stepped up for the yellow brigade. If Sanju and Ruturaj join the party, then the batting will look stronger. Also, do not forget they have Dewald Bravis and MS Dhoni, who are suffering from injury. The full-strength CSK squad will have more batting power, but will their bowling performance improve? This is a concern for CSK. Bowling is the main reason CSK suffered the most in the match against PBKS.

Here are five key reasons for which CSK lost the match against PBKS-

Fails to create pressure

CSK lost half of the match in the power play, where Priyansh Arya smashed 39 runs in just 11 balls. His intent from the very start of the innings was clear, and his every shot complemented each other, and that’s where CSK’s bowlers failed to find the right length. Not only in Powerplay, but the carnage never stopped.

From Prabhsimran Singh to Cooper Connolly and Shreyas Iyer, everyone played with a fine strike rate. Despite giving back-to-back breakthroughs, CSK failed to capitalise on moments.

Poor fielding effort

CSK's player body language in the field was off as they failed to stop as many as 15 runs in the field. Dube missed a run-out chance. Players' fielding effort can save many runs, and CSK also falters in this department.

Captaincy and tactical mismatch

Ruturaj Gaikwad entered the match with six bowling options at his disposal and looked to maximise that flexibility by introducing Rahul Chahar, who delivered an impressive spell. However, as the spinners began to take pace off and slow the game down, Gaikwad shifted towards seam, bringing on Anshul Kamboj and Matt Henry. Also, the fielding placements were not the same as the bowling plan.

20 runs short in batting

Punjab Kings wrapped up the chase well before the 1.2-over mark, which clearly indicates that Chennai Super Kings fell short of a competitive par score.

It’s also important to recognise that the Chepauk surface is no longer what it used to be on such pitches; success hinges on variety and adaptability rather than relying on traditional conditions.

Underutilisation of bowling resources

Despite the conditions offering assistance to variations, Gaikwad chose not to use Shivam Dube, whose cutters could have been effective on this surface. He also overlooked debutant Prashant Veer, who might have been deployed in the middle overs to complement the spells of Noor and Chahar.

With bowling, these are the key reasons that outplayed CSK.
