India’s men’s football team will return to England for the first time in 24 years when they face Jamaica in the Unity Cup 2026 semi-final at The Valley in London on Wednesday. The match marks a significant moment for the Blue Tigers, who last played on English soil in 2002, coincidentally against the same opponents in friendly matches at Watford and Wolverhampton.
Led by head coach Khalid Jamil, India enter the four-nation tournament aiming to test themselves against stronger international opposition. The competition also features Nigeria and Zimbabwe, with the winners of both semi-finals progressing to the final on May 30.
India look for fresh start under Khalid Jamil
Jamil emphasised that selections were made purely on current performances in the Indian Super League, where East Bengal recently lifted the title. The coach stated that players who continue to perform consistently will remain in contention for the national side.

India arrived in London with a depleted squad after the withdrawal of Mohun Bagan SG players, although goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari, midfielder Macarton Nickson and defender Nikhil Barla joined the camp later. Forward Edmund Lalrindika described the tournament as a major learning opportunity and urged Indian supporters in the United Kingdom to turn up in large numbers.
Edmund during practice session AIFF Ranked 136th in the world, India will start as underdogs against 71st-ranked Jamaica. However, Jamil insisted that facing higher-ranked teams is essential for the squad’s growth and said the team would approach the tournament step by step.
Jamaica confident despite youthful squad
Jamaica head coach Rudolph Speid has named one of the youngest squads in the tournament, with an average age of 22.8 years. Several senior players were rested after long club campaigns, but the squad still includes experienced names like captain Damion Lowe, Dexter Lembikisa, Joel Latibeaudiere and Isaac Hayden.

Speid revealed Jamaica have analysed all participating teams and are targeting the title after finishing runners-up to Nigeria in last year’s Unity Cup. Lowe also highlighted the excitement among diaspora communities in England, calling the tournament a special occasion for fans from Jamaica, India and Africa.
