In a striking pre-match moment in Turkey, Iranian players lined up carrying brightly coloured schoolbags, transforming a routine ceremony into a symbol of grief and remembrance. Standing shoulder to shoulder, the players used the imagery of schoolchildren’s belongings to honour lives lost, turning the football pitch into a space of silent protest that resonated far beyond the stadium.

The Shajareh Tayyebeh school attack

The tribute was dedicated to the victims of the February 28, 2026, strike on the Shajareh Tayyebeh School. Iranian authorities claim more than 175 people were killed, including many young girls, along with teachers and staff. The attack reportedly took place during school hours, turning a place of learning into a site of devastation and leaving communities in deep mourning.

Civilian toll and global response

The scale of casualties, particularly among children, has intensified grief across Iran and drawn international concern. Iran has blamed joint operations by the United States and Israel, while the US has said it is reviewing the incident, and Israel has not formally confirmed involvement. The uncertainty has prompted calls for an independent investigation as tensions continue to rise.

The symbolism behind the tribute

The choice of pink and purple schoolbags carried deep meaning, representing childhood, innocence, and especially young girls, many of whom were among the victims. The bags, often associated with everyday routines and dreams, stood in stark contrast to the tragedy. Paired with black armbands, a universal symbol of mourning, the gesture reflected both personal grief and collective loss.
