Mohammedan SC relegated after crushing defeat to Mumbai City FC

Mumbai City FC delivered a commanding performance against Mohammedan Sporting Club in the Indian Super League 2025-26, securing a massive 4-0 victory at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Friday. The defeat officially confirmed Mohammedan SC’s relegation to the Indian Football League for next season, while Mumbai climbed to third place in the standings.

Mumbai City FC dominate from the start

The Islanders wasted no time in asserting their authority as Sahil Panwar opened the scoring in the very first minute with a neat finish from Puipuia’s delivery. Mumbai continued to attack relentlessly in the opening exchanges, creating multiple chances through Lallianzuala Chhangte and Vikram Partap Singh. Their second goal arrived in the eighth minute after a slick passing move involving Vikram, Jorge Ortiz and Puipuia. The midfielder calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner to double the visitors’ advantage.

Mumbai’s pressure resulted in a third goal in the 25th minute when Sajad Hussain Parray accidentally turned the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a rebound after Padam Chettri’s save. Mohammedan SC struggled badly to deal with Mumbai’s attacking intensity throughout the opening half.

Brandon Fernandes completes four-goal rout

The tempo slowed after the break as Mumbai City FC focused on maintaining possession and controlling the game. Mohammedan SC rarely threatened, although Thokchom Adison Singh forced a save from TP Rehenesh with a powerful long-range effort.

The match was briefly interrupted in the 72nd minute due to thunderstorms and heavy rain, resulting in a nearly hour-long delay. After play resumed, Mumbai once again looked dangerous in attack.

Lallianzuala Chhangte nearly added another goal with a curling left-footed strike that was brilliantly tipped onto the crossbar by Padam Chettri. However, the fourth goal eventually arrived in the 79th minute when Brandon Fernandes finished clinically from Noufal P.N.’s cutback.

The final whistle sealed an emphatic win for Mumbai City FC, lifting them level on points with league leaders East Bengal FC and Mohun Bagan Super Giant, while Mohammedan SC remained rooted to the bottom of the table after their confirmed relegation.
