The Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 has witnessed the rise of Indian weightlifters as Mirabai Chanu and Chanambam Rishikanta Singh delivered a gold and silver medal respectively. PM Modi took to X to congratulate them.

Mirabai Chanu wins gold
Mirabai Chanu continued her dominance in Commonwealth Games by winning the women’s 48kg gold medal with a total lift of 190kg, 22kg ahead of the silver medalist Ruth Asuquo Nyong from Nigeria, who recorded a total lift of 168kg. This was also India’s first gold medal in the Commonwealth Games 2026.

PM Narendra Modi, in a post on X described Chanu’s performance as a “glorious chapter in Indian Weightlifting” and further added, “The talented Mirabai Chanu once again showcased her skills at the Commonwealth Games with a stunning performance in the 48 kg category and won gold. With back-to-back Commonwealth Games Golds and an overall fourth CWG medal to her name, she remains an inspiration for every Indian. Congratulations to her! Best wishes for the endeavours ahead.”
Rishikanta Singh wins silver
Chanambam Rishikanta Singh from Manipur won silver in the men’s 60kg category, by recording a total lift of 264kg, just 9kg behind Malaysia’s Mohamad Aniq Kasdan, who took gold with a lift of 273kg. Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Mboya finished third on 260kg.
PM Modi also congratulated Rishikanta by writing, “Very proud of Indian lifter Rishikanta Singh Chanambam for winning a Silver Medal and also achieving his personal best. His determination and outstanding performance have brought immense joy to the nation. May he continue to scale greater heights and inspire many young athletes. Best wishes for his future endeavours!”
The two medals underlined a strong day for Indian athletes in the Commonwealth Games.
