Delhi eyes Yamuna express corridor, fast-tracks Metro expansion to unclog city roads

Delhi plans 19.2 km elevated road along Yamuna and accelerates Metro expansion. New corridors and flyovers aim to ease congestion and improve connectivity.

The Delhi government has proposed a 19.2 km elevated road along the Yamuna to ease traffic across key stretches of the city. The corridor will run from Wazirabad to DND in three phases. These include Surghat to ISBT, ISBT to Sarai Kale Khan, and Sarai Kale Khan to DND. The project aims to create a seamless high-speed route.

CM reviews transport push, flags priority projects

According to The Hindustan Times, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta chaired a high-level meeting with senior officials, including representatives from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. She stressed that modern public transport and road infrastructure remain key to reducing congestion and improving mobility in the capital.

Metro Phase IV nears major milestones

Officials said a 104.45 km metro network with 81 stations is under construction, with Phase IV progress at nearly 80 per cent. Corridors expected by December 2026 include Krishna Park Extension to Deepali Chowk, Majlis Park to Derawal Nagar, and Tughlakabad to Aerocity. These are expected to improve connectivity across the city.

Phase V expansion and future corridors underway

Work has begun on Phase V corridors such as R.K. Ashram Marg to Indraprastha, Aerocity to IGI Airport Terminal 1, and Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj. At the same time, additional Phase IV stretches, including Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block and Rithala to Kundli, are targeted for completion by March 2029.

Flyovers and double-decker projects gather pace

Several flyover projects are progressing alongside Metro expansion. The 2.16 km double-decker flyover from Azadpur to Tripolia Chowk is over 70 per cent complete. The Yamuna Vihar to Bhajanpura flyover has reached around 85 percent completion. In South Delhi, work on the Saket G Block to Sangam Vihar corridor is also advancing, along with underpasses at key junctions.

Integrated plan aims to cut congestion and pollution

Additional projects, such as the Tripolia Gate to Barfkhana flyover and the Maa Anandmayee Marg to Pul Prahladpur stretch, are in the pipeline. Some challenges, like land acquisition and clearances, are being addressed. The chief minister said the combined expansion of Metro and road infrastructure will make commuting faster and help reduce congestion and pollution in the city.
