The ongoing Indian Super League season may appear competitive on the surface, but a deeper look reveals structural imbalances that could significantly influence outcomes. While Mohun Bagan Super Giant lead the standings, the disparity in home and away fixtures across teams has raised serious questions about fairness. With promotion and relegation now in effect, these inconsistencies carry consequences far beyond points on the table, potentially shaping the financial and sporting futures of clubs.

Home advantage imbalance shaping results

Few examples highlight the issue better than Mohammedan Sporting, who have managed just one point from eight matches, with only two games played at home so far. By the end of the season, they are expected to have played just three home fixtures, a stark contrast to rivals. In comparison, East Bengal FC have played the majority of their matches at home, collecting a significant portion of their points in familiar conditions. Mohun Bagan too have benefited from a more balanced schedule, with multiple home fixtures contributing to their strong position at the top.

Venue shifts worsen competitive imbalance

The inequality extends beyond scheduling into venue disruptions. Several teams have been forced to shift home matches due to logistical or regulatory reasons. Odisha FC will play key fixtures in Goa instead of their usual base, while Punjab FC have hosted games in New Delhi. Inter Kashi have also staged home matches in Kolkata as their own stadium remains under construction. Meanwhile, Rajasthan United in the second tier face relocation due to infrastructure requirements set by the All India Football Federation. These changes dilute the concept of home advantage and disrupt team preparations.

High stakes amplify impact of inequality

The timing of these inconsistencies is crucial, as the league has reintroduced promotion and relegation in line with Asian Football Confederation regulations. Clubs finishing at the bottom risk dropping to the lower division, bringing financial losses, reduced visibility, and limited player attraction. On the other hand, top performers gain access to continental competitions and higher revenues. Despite clubs urging authorities to treat the season as an exceptional circumstance, there has been little movement on the issue. As the season progresses, the imbalance in fixtures and venues could prove decisive in determining not just standings, but the broader trajectory of Indian football clubs.
