ChatGPT Down? Thousands report major global outage as OpenAI services face disruption

ChatGPT, the AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, experienced a widespread outage on Monday, April 20, 2026, leaving thousands of users unable to access services. Reports of disruption came from multiple regions, with Downdetector showing a sharp rise in complaints within minutes.

According to early data, user complaints quickly crossed 1,000 and then increased to over 1,500, showing that the problem was spreading fast across both mobile and web platforms. The outage also affected developers and professionals who depend on OpenAI tools for their daily work.

OpenAI has confirmed that it is actively investigating the issue, but has not yet shared the exact cause or expected recovery time.

User reports increase in Downdetector

According to Downdetector, over 3,000 users in the US and India reported issues with ChatGPT and Codex. More than 80% of users in India (82%) and 86% in the US faced problems accessing the platform.

Outage affecting multiple platforms and services

The disruption was not limited to one feature. Users reported failures across ChatGPT web, mobile app, and Codex, the coding assistant used for writing and debugging programs. Some users still accessed the platform normally, suggesting a partial or regional outage.

What OpenAI responded

OpenAI’s official status page confirmed the issue and stated, “We’re currently experiencing issues,” the company said.

“Users unable to load ChatGPT, Codex and API Platform. We are continuing to investigate the issue for the listed services,” the company added.

It also noted, “Users may encounter issue with ChatGPT Business after upgrade or adding new seats for up to an hour. We have applied the mitigation and are monitoring the recovery,” highlighting ongoing recovery efforts.

As reports of the ChatGPT outage spread quickly, searches for “ChatGPT down” also increased on social media. Users reacted by posting memes, jokes, and instant responses online. Many joked about having to depend on their own thinking again, while others checked X to confirm whether the outage was affecting everyone as OpenAI worked to fix the issue.
