The Delhi High Court has directed the All India Tennis Association (AITA) to expedite amendments to its constitution and complete fresh elections by September 30, 2026. The move is aimed at ensuring the federation complies with the National Sports Governance Act, 2025, and resolves long-pending administrative issues.
The court instructed the administrator overseeing AITA's affairs to fast-track the process of revising the federation's rules and regulations. Once the amendments are finalised, elections must be conducted within the timeline set by the court.
Constitution changes in focus
AITA has been working to align its governance structure with the provisions of the new sports law. The proposed changes include reforms related to administration, representation, eligibility criteria and the functioning of the federation's executive body.

However, AITA argued that the original judgment, which arose from a petition filed by former India players Somdev Devvarman and Purav Raja, did not find any illegality in the federation's elections. The association maintained that the appointment of an administrator despite the absence of electoral irregularities was unwarranted and had effectively created a parallel administrative structure alongside the elected body.
Elections to follow revised rules
The High Court made it clear that elections should be held only after the constitutional amendments are completed. This would ensure that the new office-bearers are elected under rules that comply with the National Sports Governance Act.
The September 30 deadline is expected to accelerate the reform process and provide clarity to stakeholders within Indian tennis. The court believes a timely election will help establish a stable and legally compliant governing body for the sport.

The decision is a significant step in AITA's ongoing restructuring process. With a firm deadline now in place, the federation must complete the required reforms and move towards fresh elections over the next few months.
The outcome of the exercise could shape the future administration of Indian tennis, with the court seeking greater transparency, accountability and adherence to the country's updated sports governance standards.
