Camera upgrades have always had a key role in how Apple revitalises the iPhone each year. In a breakthrough, Apple is working towards bringing a 200MP camera to the iPhone lineup in 2028.
Possibilities of a 200MP camera
According to India Today, this is not the first time that such a possibility has emerged. Such a trend was observed last year, when the well-known Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station asserted that Apple was internally testing a 200MP camera for future iPhones.
However, there is no such information about when the upgrade might actually reach consumers.
The Morgan Stanley report now gives a more substantial timeframe, mentioning that Apple is still a few product cycles away from leaping.

What do we have now?
Apple employs 48MP sensors across all rear cameras on the iPhone, which include the main, ultra-wide, and telephoto lenses. The evolution from 12MP to 48MP began with the main camera and was later added to other lenses. It helps Apple to balance greater detail with computational photography features like pixel binning.
According to the new report, Apple is anticipated to stay with the current megapixel count for the next few generations. It includes the upcoming iPhone 18 lineup and even the 2027 models.

The postponed action to 200MP is said to be due to the supply chain strategy. Morgan Stanley researchers think that Apple wants to diversify its suppliers rather than rely heavily on a single company.
