Anthropic has suspended access to its advanced artificial intelligence models, Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, for Indian users and other foreign nationals after receiving a US government export control directive tied to national security concerns.

The move comes days after the company expanded access to the models under Project Glasswing, a programme that included nearly 200 organisations across multiple countries, including India.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Anthropic said the directive requires the company to halt access to both models for any foreign national, regardless of whether they are located inside or outside the United States.

The company added that all other Anthropic models remain unaffected by the order.

Anthropic disputes government concerns

Anthropic publicly disagreed with the decision, describing it as a misunderstanding and expressing hope that access could be restored in the near future.

According to the company, US authorities cited national security concerns and alleged awareness of a potential method of bypassing or "jailbreaking" Fable 5. However, Anthropic said it was not provided with specific details supporting those concerns.

The company argued that decisions affecting advanced AI deployments should follow a transparent process grounded in technical evidence and clear statutory procedures.

The directive follows an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump earlier this month establishing a framework for evaluating national security risks associated with advanced AI systems before their public release.

Although participation by AI developers was initially described as voluntary, Anthropic said the latest order effectively compelled it to disable access to the two models immediately.

India was recently added to Project Glasswing

The suspension is particularly significant for India because access to Claude Mythos had only recently been expanded under Project Glasswing.

According to reports, the programme was extended to nearly 200 organisations, including government-linked entities and cybersecurity agencies.

Among the Indian organisations understood to have received access are the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC), and the Department of Telecommunications' Digital Intelligence Platform.

The sudden withdrawal of access has affected developers, researchers and institutions that had only recently begun working with the advanced models.

While Anthropic has indicated that it is seeking a resolution, there is currently no timeline for when Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 might become available again to Indian users and other foreign nationals.
