YouTube is once again introducing private messaging, allowing users to share videos and hold conversations without leaving the platform. The feature is gradually rolling out to users aged 18 and above in the United States and selected international markets.
The update marks the return of direct messaging on YouTube nearly seven years after the company discontinued its earlier messaging system in 2019.
Messaging returns after years away
The video-sharing platform had previously removed its private messaging feature to focus more on public interactions and community engagement tools. However, following tests of a revamped messaging experience in late 2025, YouTube found that many users still wanted a simpler way to exchange videos and discuss content directly within the app.

The new rollout reflects that demand, offering a built-in option for conversations around videos without requiring users to switch to other messaging services.
Age verification and invite-only access
Unlike its earlier version, the latest messaging feature comes with additional safeguards designed to reduce unwanted contact.
Users must complete age verification before gaining access to messaging. In addition, conversations can only be initiated through invitation links shared via third-party messaging platforms. This means users cannot randomly message others on YouTube.
A new "Messages" icon appears in the top-right corner of the YouTube app, where eligible users can create and send invitation links to friends and family. Once connected, participants can exchange videos and chat within the platform.
The invite-only setup indicates that YouTube is focusing on private interactions among existing contacts rather than encouraging open messaging between strangers.

Sharing videos without leaving YouTube
“Our community loves to share videos with their friends and family, and we want them to be able to do it in one place,” YouTube said in its announcement.
As per a report by the Indian Express, company users frequently share music videos, tutorials, shorts, and other content through external apps. The new messaging option is intended to make that process more convenient.
YouTube also said that conversations and shared content will remain subject to its existing community guidelines and moderation policies. The company plans to gather user feedback as it continues expanding the feature.
