Google plans deep AI collaboration with India as Sundar Pichai signals major investment

Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the company wants to be a long-term partner in India’s AI journey, citing investments, infrastructure, and talent development.

Silicon Valley tech giant Google has expressed its intention to become a major partner in India’s artificial intelligence (AI) journey. CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted that the country’s growing role in technological development is at a crucial stage. He said AI has entered a significant phase globally and that India’s potential in this field is substantial.

Pichai made the remarks during a virtual interview with the Economic Times ahead of attending the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. "We are coming with a very clear message: we want to be a partner to India. I believe India is going to have an extraordinary trajectory and opportunity with AI," he said.

Investment in infrastructure and local ecosystem

According to Pichai, Google intends to work comprehensively in India’s AI development, including cloud infrastructure, computing capacity, data systems, research, and local talent development.

Google recently announced an investment plan of $18.5 billion to build AI infrastructure, data centres, and advanced technology capabilities. As part of its India strategy, the company is working with Reliance Jio to create cloud infrastructure. It is also developing data centres and renewable energy projects in partnership with Adani and CleanMax.

Building AI products for India

Google is developing AI-based products and solutions tailored specifically for the Indian market, aiming to deliver advanced AI services to customers and businesses across the country.

Over the past decade, the company has developed AI models such as Gemini, conducted research through DeepMind, and built its own TPU chips. Pichai noted that India’s talent base and large user ecosystem will play a significant role in shaping the future of AI. He emphasised that Google is seeking to establish a long-term partnership with India in this sector.
