At the India AI Impact Summit 2026, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei stated that India would play a significant role in the world as it confronts the rapid development of AI and its significant impact.

Speaking before the attendees on Thursday, Amodei discussed the increased concerns over autonomous behavior in AI models, the possibility of misuse by individuals and countries, and the possibility of economic disruption. These concerns, Amodei stated, are occurring in tandem with unprecedented technological growth.

Amodei noted that AI development over the past few years has been “absolutely staggering”. Referring to the global AI dialogue that began at the 2023 summit in Bletchley Park, he described the current moment as a turning point. According to him, AI has followed an exponential growth curve for nearly a decade, similar to a “Moore’s Law for intelligence”.

‘Country of geniuses in a data centre’

He said the world may be only a few years away from AI systems surpassing the cognitive abilities of most humans across a wide range of tasks. “For most things, we're increasingly close to what I've called a country of geniuses in a data centre, a set of AI agents that are more capable than most humans at most things, and can coordinate at superhuman speed. That level of capability is something the world has never seen before, and brings a very wide range of both opportunities and concerns for humanity”, Amodei said.

While outlining the potential, he said such systems could help cure long-standing diseases, improve healthcare outcomes, lift billions out of poverty, including in the Global South, and “create a better world for everyone.”

Risks alongside opportunity

However, Amodei cautioned against the significant risks associated with autonomous decision-making in AI models, the possibility of misuse, and the possibility of economic disruption due to AI.

“On the side of risks, I am concerned about the autonomous behaviour of AI models, their potential for misuse by individuals and governments and their potential for economic displacement. India has an absolutely central role to play in these questions and challenges, both on the side of the opportunities and on the side of the risks”, Amodei stressed.
