Paris Saint-Germain continued their strong run in the UEFA Champions League with a convincing 2-0 win over Liverpool in the first leg of their quarterfinal clash. The home side took the lead early in the 11th minute when Desire Doue struck from outside the box. His effort took a deflection and looped over goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, giving PSG an early advantage. Liverpool, managed by Arne Slot, tried to respond before half-time but struggled to break through a well-organised PSG side. The English team, who have had a difficult run recently, were cautious in their approach and found it hard to create clear chances.

Second half surge seals advantage

PSG stepped up their intensity after the break and doubled their lead in the 65th minute through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The winger made a strong run into the box, rounded the goalkeeper and finished calmly to make it 2-0. The French side dominated the match, registering 18 shots with six on target, while Liverpool managed only three attempts and none on target. PSG also controlled possession with around 74 per cent, showing their authority throughout the game. There were more chances late on, including a powerful effort from Achraf Hakimi that was saved well. Ousmane Dembele also came close with a strike that hit the post after a quick exchange with Lee Kang In.

Liverpool hold on but face tough task

Despite the defeat, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said the team still has a chance in the second leg. He admitted they need to improve, especially in possession, and produce a special performance at Anfield. This result marked Liverpool’s fourth consecutive away defeat, their worst run since April 2012. The team also recently suffered a heavy loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup. PSG, led by coach Luis Enrique, will now head to the second leg with a strong advantage. The winner of this tie will face either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the next round.
