A new Aadhaar app has been launched by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). This app can be used for verification of age under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP Act). No additional data will be needed for the verification, PTI reported.

At the app's launch on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Electronics and IT Secretary S. Krishnan said the government has amended the Swik Rules, formally called the Aadhaar Authentication for Good Governance (Social Welfare, Innovation, Knowledge) Rules, 2020.

He said the changes will allow private entities to offer services using Aadhaar authentication in a secure manner.

How Aadhaar age verification will work

The Secretary said, "We frequently contend within the ambit of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act is age verification and how age verification will be done. I think we are in a position where, with the Aadhaar app, there is actually a way that age gating can seamlessly apply without oversharing the data."

He said several firms are building such solutions and have showcased them at the Aadhaar event. Secretary Krishnan explained that age gating will help online platforms verify the age of users before offering services. This includes social media, online gaming, and e-commerce sites, according to PTI.

Age verification, he added, will also help platforms reduce children's access to content or products that are not suitable for their age.

Other features of the new Aadhaar app

The app also offers a digital contact card. Users can share their details with others instead of giving paper visiting cards.

It allows one Aadhaar holder to add up to five profiles on the same app. These can include children or parents who may not have their own mobile numbers. This feature will make digital verification easier for family members at airports, cinema halls, and events, without requiring physical documents, PTI reported.

Under the Aadhaar Act, private entities are prohibited from storing Aadhaar data in any form. This includes keeping photocopies.
