US President Donald Trump on Monday shared a photo of New Delhi's India Gate on his social media platform Truth Social, where he described the iconic monument as a "beautiful Triumphal Arch" and reiterated his vision of building "the greatest" one in Washington DC.

In his post, the US President said, "India's beautiful Triumphal Arch. Ours will be the greatest of them all!"

To recognise America's 250 years of Independence

The announcement follows Trump's push to construct a gigantic new triumphal arch in Washington DC to recognise the 250th anniversary of America's Independence. On Sunday, Trump publicly stated that he would like to see Washington DC have the largest triumphal arch of the many already in existence because America is the largest and strongest country in the world.

"For 200 years, they wanted to build an arch," news agency Hindustan Times quoted as telling reporters travelling with him on Air Force One.

In the same breath, the President noted that there were nearly 57 cities throughout the world with existing triumphal arches and that he was disappointed that Washington DC was the "only major city" without an existing triumphal arch.

Trump's plans for triumphal arch

Last October, Trump revealed plans for a large triumphal arch. In the past, he hinted that construction would begin within two months, but no work has been done yet.

"It'll be great. Everyone loves it," he said in a phone interview with Politico from his Palm Beach estate, as reported by Hindustan Times. "They love the ballroom too. But they love the Triumphal Arch," he added.

In the past few months, President Trump has produced drawings of an arch design in the Oval Office and pointed out that world-renowned architects will create the arch. He added that the arch will not be taller than the White House.

"I could have built a much bigger one, but I did not want it to be taller than the White House," Trump said, adding that a government committee would be set up to oversee the project.

The design is loosely based on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and will be located across the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial.
