Bollywood actor and living legend Amitabh Bachchan has appeared in a new road safety video released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). In the video, he explains the correct use of turn indicators and the right way to drive on the road.

Bachchan is frequently featured in government campaigns. As one of the most influential voices in the Bollywood industry, he is often chosen for public awareness drives.

Bachchan's message in the video

In the video, Bachchan advocates preparedness while driving. He advises drivers against cutting off other vehicles in traffic. He urges them to use turn indicators before taking a turn on a moving road. He also stresses the importance of checking rear view mirrors before making any turning manoeuvre.

This is not the first time Bachchan has represented a government road safety initiative. He previously led the 'Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan' campaign, which aims to raise awareness about road safety, encourage responsible driving, and reduce the number of fatalities caused by road accidents each year.

India's road safety crisis

As per the report of NDTV, Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways, has been giving road safety a push. Government data shows that around 5 lakh deaths occurred due to not wearing helmets, and 30,000 deaths were linked to not using seat belts. Of all victims, 65 per cent belonged to the 18-44 age group.

Government schemes and their impact

The government has launched the 'Rah Veer' scheme to encourage bystanders to help accident victims. Good Samaritans who assist accident victims receive Rs 25,000 as a reward. The government also covers medical expenses of up to Rs 1.5 lakh. These efforts have already shown results. Fatalities in certain districts have dropped by nearly 50 per cent. Authorities believe that stronger enforcement and greater awareness could save at least 50,000 lives every year, as cited by NDTV.
