In a significant push towards modernising healthcare education, All India Institute of Medical Sciences has launched a state-of-the-art virtual reality training centre for medical and nursing students. The facility aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world clinical exposure by using immersive VR technology. The centre allows students to simulate real-life medical scenarios, enabling them to practise procedures, refine decision-making skills and gain hands-on experience without any risk to patients. This controlled learning environment is expected to build confidence among students before they enter actual clinical settings.
Collaboration with MediSim VR
The initiative has been developed in collaboration with MediSim VR and is housed within the SET Facility at AIIMS. The partnership will focus on integrating AI-enabled VR solutions into medical curricula through structured, simulation-based training programmes. Beyond training, the collaboration also aims to research the effectiveness of VR in medical education. This includes evaluating its impact on skill development, standardisation of training, and assessment methods, with a long-term vision of embedding such technologies into mainstream education systems.
Leadership underscores importance of innovation
Speaking at the launch, M. Srinivas emphasised the importance of innovation in medical teaching and training. He highlighted that immersive VR simulations closely replicate real clinical environments, thereby improving both learning outcomes and training consistency.
Echoing this sentiment, Ambuj Roy noted that VR-based training could redefine how healthcare professionals are trained, enhancing precision and preparedness while setting new benchmarks in education standards. From the industry side, Adith Chinnaswami and Sabarish Chandrasekaran stressed the importance of research-backed implementation to ensure long-term adoption of VR technologies in healthcare learning.
